10. Big Hero 6
In 2014, Disney Animation continued their incredible hot streak as of late with the great Big Hero 6. The animation in this film is beautiful and the story line is perhaps even better. The voice work done in this movie is top-notch from to to bottom, led by Ryan Potter and Scott Adsit, who excellently bring to life Hiro and Baymax respectively. Speaking of Baymax, he becomes an instant legendary Disney characters from the moment he graces the screen with his presence. With the immense success of Big Hero 6, Disney is officially in the midst of a third golden age for the company.
9. X-Men: Days of Future Past
When 2014's outing of the X-Men was originally announced, I was ecstatic to see this film. How could one call themselves an X-Men fan and not be excited to see the original cast team up with the rebooted cast for one incredible display of comic book hysteria? However, when you have a cast of this magnitude, you also anticipate it with slight hesitation because you don't want to be too disappointed if it doesn't live up to your lofty expectations. However, within the first twenty minutes of this film, all those hesitations were put to rest and I knew without a shadow of a doubt that this installment in the X-Men franchise would go down as one of the best installments in not only X-Men history, but in superhero movie genre history. Director Bryan Singer is firing on all cylinders with this film, led by the impeccable Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Hugh Jackman follows suit.
8. Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
Of all the movies that I saw in 2014, this one took me the most by surprise, and I mean that in the kindest way possible. I never envisioned that I would enjoy Birdman as much as I did! Michael Keaton turns in a powerhouse performance while his costars Emma Stone and Edward Norton turn in perhaps career-best performances. Director Alejandro G. Innaritu has truly crafted a masterpiece that could end up being one of the defining films of this generation. I was most shocked by how powerful the message is within this movie (summed up in my favorite scene of the film by Emma Stone and her AWESOME speech). Birdman is so unique and one-of-a-kind that it is really impossible to resist.
7. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Can Marvel continue to outdo itself? Upon watching Cap 2, I beginning to think that they can. What a game-changing movie this is! Chris Evans continues to excel as the First Avenger and Scarlett Johannson, as per usual, shines in her role as Black Widow once again. Newcomers to the franchise Robert Redford and Anthony Mackie add another layer to the Marvel formula as the studio just keeps on piling up hit after hit. The biggest shoutout for this film must go to the two directors though: Joe and Anthony Russo. To come into the Marvel universe and deliver a film as amazing as this one is no small task whatsoever. The battle sequences are some of the best action scenes in superhero movie history (i.e. the Hellicarrier crash into SHIELD Headquarters). To change the entire fate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not an easy thing to accomplish with The Winter Soldier does just that, and does so with flying colors.
6. Into the Woods
I do have an admitted bias in my love for this film as Into the Woods is one of my favorite Broadway musicals of all-time and I also portrayed Jack in my hometown's production of the musical in early 2015. I knew going into the movie that it would really have to mess up a lot of aspects from the stage show for me to walk away disappointed. I was thoroughly impressed and blown away by what transpired on screen upon watching this musical come to life like never before. The entire cast is superb, headlined by Emily Blunt as the Baker's Wife and Chris Pine as Cinderella's Prince. Both Blunt and Pine steal the show every time they appear on screen. Of course, the immortal Meryl Streep turns in a predictably fantastic performance. Anna Kendrick and James Corden are also wonderful as Cinderella and the Baker respectively.. Director Rob Marshall just knows how to direct a musical, and his eye and passion for Broadway is clearly evident in this adaption.
5. Guardians of the Galaxy
In my recent memory, I cannot remember a movie that completely took me off guard in the greatest way possible then the way Guardians of the Galaxy did. A lot has been made about this film and the way it revolutionizes the comic book genre, and the hype surrounding this movie is completely warranted. Chris Pratt establishes himself as one of the biggest movie stars in the world. His combination of humor with his physical prowess is something that is not easily comparable. Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista turn in great performances as well. Bradley Cooper's Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel's Groot steal every scene that are in, and they are in a lot of scenes. Director James Gunn deserves an immense amount of credit for the success of Guardians as he combines humor with action seamlessly. Once again, Marvel outshines itself.
4. Whiplash
Six months prior to this writing, I had never even heard of Whiplash, so if you would have told me then that it would occupy the number four spot on this list, I definitely would not have believed you. However, once the Oscar season got rolling and JK Simmons begin to win every award possible, I took notice, and when I finally caught this film, I was genuinely blown away. Simmons turns in one of the most terrifyingly great performances of the modern era. The praise geared specifically towards him is certainly deserved. Miles Teller continues to prove that he will be a dynamite star in Hollywood for years to come. Damien Chazelle is a prodigy, plain and simple. I can hardly wait to see what he does next! This movie also contains my vote for best quote of 2014: "The two most harmful words in the English language are 'good job.'" Do yourself a favor and seek out this film.
3. Gone Girl
When it was announced that David Fincher was going to be in the director's chair once again, immediately, I was excited. Then, however, I learned that his next film would be based on one of the most popular books of the last few years. Therefore, I began to read Gone Girl, and it quickly became one of my favorite books ever and picture perfect for Fincher to direct. His film adaption is simply stellar. Fincher combines the book's twisted humor with his patented eeriness and the final result is breathtaking. Ben Affleck continues to shine with his career resurgence and his costars Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry are true scene stealers. But the real superstar of Gone Girl is Rosamund Pike. As the titular character, Pike turns in one of the best performances by an actress of all-time. This is a performance that we will still be talking about and dissecting forty years from now. For that matter, this is a movie that we will still be talking about and dissecting forty years from now.
2. American Sniper
I always have had the utmost respect for our nation's sublime military, and Hollywood has always done a more than admirable job at paying tribute to those men and women who fight oversees and domestically to protect our nation's freedom. I'm not sure anyone anticipated the massive success that American Sniper enjoyed, but this movie is worthy of all the hype surrounding it and some. The story of Chris Kyle and his family is a powerful one, and everyone involved in the making of this film is clearly only interested in making sure they tell Kyle's story perfectly. Bradley Cooper gives the best performance of his career undoubtedly in my book. He is sensational from beginning to end, combining the physicality of the role with the emotion and tenderness needed when Kyle is being portrayed as a father and a family man. Director Clint Eastwood has crafted one of his finest films of his already illustrious career. This is one of those rare films that you leave the theater feeling privileged that you taken in such a powerhouse of a movie.
1. Interstellar
I have safely come to the conclusion that director Christopher Nolan can do no wrong. What he has crafted with Interstellar is without question a modern day masterpiece. The thought-provoking messages and ideas layered within the entirety of the film's run-time is something that provides this film with an immense amount of humanity. Matthew McConaughey delivers a career-best performance. His emotionally depth in this movie is beyond sensational. Every single moment that he is on the screen, I genuinely felt some sort of emotion which is something that doesn't happen often with me. Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain are predictably phenomenal as well. The real star of Interstellar is, however, Nolan himself and his materful stroytelling. This is one of those films that will not only define a generation; it can and will define an entire genre. Science-fictions of the future, you owe everything to Interstellar.
Honorable Mentions: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The LEGO Movie, The Fault in Our Stars, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Unbroken, Edge of Tomorrow, Maleficient, Boyhood, The Imitation Game

Top 20 Most Anticipated Films for 2015
20. Black Mass
Synopsis: The true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf.
Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Johnny Depp, Sienna Miller, Joel Edgerton
Director: Scott Cooper
Release: September 18
Whenever I look for films that could be contenders to make this list, I always look at the star power each movie will offer. With Black Mass, we have the prospect of seeing two of the most talented actors in the world in Cumberbatch and Depp work with director Scott Cooper, who directed Jeff Bridges to an Academy Award in 2009. Then, when you look at the synopsis and release date, all signs point to this film being in the Oscar race next season. The combination of Cumberbatch and Depp is the factor that really made me excited for this film because they both have very unique acting styles, and I cannot wait to see their personalities come together on the big screen for the first time.
19. Pan
Synopsis: The story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny -- to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Levi Miller, Rooney Mara, Garrett Hedlund
Director: Joe Wright
Release: July 24
I must admit that I am a sucker for any storyline set in Neverland. The story truly is a timeless classic, and with every twist of the tale, something comes along that reinvents and makes the story of Peter Pan fresh for a brand new generation. With this adaption, we get the prequel to it all. Captain Hook isn't Captain Hook yet and Pan himself doesn't seem to know what all is going on. I love the direction this film seems to be heading in, but the main reason to anticipate this film for me is Hugh Jackman's presence. Jackman is one of the best actors working today, and now he gets to take on the roll of Blackbeard. If you check out the trailer for this movie, Jackman seems to be having a blast with this role. Surrounding him with newcomer Miller (Pan) and young, upcoming thespians like Mara and Hedlund and you have many reasons to be excited for Pan.
18. Cinderella
Synopsis: A live-action retelling of the classic fairy tale about a servant step-daughter who wins the heart of a prince.
Starring: Lily James, Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Release: March 13
Disney has recently adapted the story of Sleeping Beauty into live action with the 2014 hit, Maleficent. In 2010, they gave Alice in Wonderland the live action treatment, and both films had tremendous success at the box office. Naturally, Disney then begins to search for more of their older animated classics to bring to life like never before for a brand new audience, and in March, Disney will bring their most famous princess back to the big screen, Cinderella. This is reason enough for me to be excited for this film, but then you tell me that the Fairy Godmother will be played by Carter and the stepmother will be portrayed by Blanchett and you'll see me opening day.
17. The Fantastic Four
Synopsis: A group of scientists are mutated into superpowered beings and must become heroes to save the world.
Starring: Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell
Director: Josh Trank
Release: August 7
The Fantastic Four have made plenty attempts to make it big on the silver screen, but unfortunately to not a lot of success, which is quite a shame considering that every other comic book franchise has had success lately. This group of heroes will return in a rebooted start for the franchise in 2015, and this time around, we have an extremely talented and promising cast to bring Mr. Fantastic and company to life. Teller, Mara, Jordan, and Bell are more than capable of turning The Fantastic Four into a success, and being directed by Josh Trank, the mind behind the 2012 surprise hit Chronicle, surely helps.
16. The Good Dinosaur
Synopsis: Arlo, a 70-foot-tall teenage Apatosaurus, befriends a young human boy named Spot.
Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Judy Greer, Bill Hader, John Lithgow
Director: Peter Sohn
Release: November 25
Pixar took 2014 off unintentionally. They originally had The Good Dinosaur slated to be released this past year, but some internal directorial problems halted production and pushed the release date back to November 2015. No matter how many director changes and creative tweaks have been made to this movie, this is still Pixar we're talking about, and we should expect nothing short of yet another animated classic. This story takes place in a world where the dinosaurs never went extinct as Arlo befriends a human child and goes on an incredible journey. The voice talent in the film also look extremely talented and I cannot wait to see Pixar back at the top of their game.
15. The Jungle Book
Synopsis: An orphan boy is raised in the jungle with the help of a pack of wolves, a bear, and a black panther.
Starring: Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba, Neel Sethi
Director: Jon Favreau
Release: October 9
Disney once again continues its trend to bring some of their earliest animated classics to the big screen in a brand new light in October with The Jungle Book. This story is one that I can imagine being solidly done with a live action twist, and the cast that director Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Chef) is packed with talent. Murray will voice Baloo, Johansson does the wily snake Kaa, and Elba brings Shere Khan to life. Newcomer Sethi will be the lone actual human on the screen as he portrays Mowgli. This is a kind of passion project for Favreau as he is already dropping hints at some behind the scenes pictures and moments on social media. Disney is clearly behind it, and if they're behind it, I'm sold!
14. Minions
Synopsis: Minions Stuart, Kevin and Bob are recruited by Scarlet Overkill, a super-villain who, alongside her inventor husband Herb, hatches a plot to take over the world.
Starring: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud, Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm
Directors: Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin
Release: July 10
When Despicable Me hit theaters in 2010, audiences around the globe immediately fell in love with Gru's sidekicks, the Minions. Their popularity has grown so much that Universal is giving these guys their own movie, a prequel of sorts as the Minions are searching for the most despicable owner they can find. I admittedly love the Minions and their crazy hi-jinks. With Bullock and Hamm on board with Coffin and Renaud returning to voice the many Minions, July 10 cannot come soon enough.
13. Terminator: Genisys
Synopsis: After finding himself in a new time-line, Kyle Reese teams up with John Connor's mother Sarah and an aging terminator to try and stop the one thing that the future fears, "Judgement Day".
Starring: Arnold Schwarzeneggar, Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney, Emilia Clarke
Director: Alan Taylor
Release: July 1
I understand I am in the minority when I say that I still love the Terminator franchise. I enjoyed the third and fourth installment more so than I think anybody else did, so I'm very excited and intrigued to see Schwarzeneggar back in action in the franchise that made him a superstar. The first trailer looked extremely promising and the cast around Arnold is filled with talent and potential. Jason Clarke is one of the best up and coming actors in the business and Jai Courtney is apparently the go to guy nowadays to reboot a franchise. Alan Taylor has shown his ability to direct a good action film with already having Thor: The Dark World on his resume. I'm just thrilled that Arnold and Co. is back.
12. Untitled Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks Spy Thriller
Synopsis: An American lawyer is recruited by the CIA during the Cold War to help rescue a pilot detained in the Soviet Union.
Starring: Tom Hanks, Billy Magnussen, Amy Ryan, Alan Alda
Director: Steven Spielberg
Release: October 16
Usually, if a film has yet to get a title or a trailer and all we know is the cast and crew, it won't make my list of most anticipated films for the upcoming year. However, when Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks are involved, I don't care what they're doing; I'm in! Hanks is my favorite actor and Spielberg is my favorite director; anytime they've worked together, whether it be Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can, or The Terminal, they just have a knack for producing classics. Now, they're tackling a spy thriller with a script penned by Joel and Ethan Coen. October 16 can't get here soon enough.
11. Joy
Synopsis: A story based on the life of a struggling Long Island single mom who became one of the country's most successful entrepreneurs.
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez
Director: David O. Russell
Release: December 25
Director David O. Russell has delivered two of my favorite films of recent memory in Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, and next Christmas, his next film reunites Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper to bring to life the story of Joy Mangano, the entrepreneur who gave the world The Miracle Mop. This film just feels like yet another hit for Lawrence who is undoubtedly my favorite actress going right now. Russell directed both Lawrence and Cooper to Oscar nominations in Playbook and Hustle, so the expectations are high for this film, and I expect this cast and crew to make this film just as fantastic as those two films.
10. Mission: Impossible 5
Synopsis: The plot is unknown at this time.
Starring: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Release: December 25
Once again, we have a film making the list without a plot or title, but this is the Mission: Impossible franchise we're talking about here, a franchise that continues to get better with every installment. The last film, Ghost Protocol, was by far the best in the series and Cruise and company will be looking to build off that franchise momentum. I'm stoked to see that Renner is returning as I loved the dynamic his presence brought to the screen opposite of Cruise, who has had a career resurgence in the last few years thanks to some solid action films (see 2014's Edge of Tomorrow). McQuarrie knows his way around directing Cruise in an action film as he has Jack Reacher on his resume, one of Cruise's more underrated works as of late.
9. Ant-Man
Synopsis: Armed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
Starring: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll
Director: Peyton Reed
Release: July 17
This latest film from Marvel probably would not have been ranked this high had it not been for the surprise juggernaut of 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy, where Marvel proved that they are more than capable of delivering high quality movies outside of Iron Man and Captain America. Ant-Man is yet another departure from the Marvel stereotypical film as the story of Scott Lang is not as well known as the story of Bruce Banner. However, at this point, who has any right to question Marvel's ability to make a film like Ant-Man great?
8. Inside Out
Synopsis: Told from the perspective of the emotions inside the mind of a little girl.
Starring: Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan
Directors: Pete Docter and Ronaldo Del Carmen
Release: June 19
Pixar first of two outings in 2015 will be released in June with the highly anticipated Inside Out. Pete Docter returns to the directing chair after delivering such animated classics as Monsters Inc. and Up. Docter has assembled a top-notch voice cast led by Poehler and Hader to bring this unique and creatively original idea to the big screen. The first trailer for this film was a stroke of genius and after having to go an entire year without Pixar, June 19 is going to be a day of rejoicing.
7. Tomorrowland
Synopsis: Bound by a shared destiny, a teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor embark on a mission to unearth the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory.
Starring: George Clooney, Britt Robertson, Judy Greer, Hugh Laurie
Director: Brad Bird
Release: May 22
Disney is on a roll as of late and when they decide to delve into original material, they have delivered mightily. In May 2015, they will take on another intriguingly creative film with Tomorrowland. The first trailer released for this movie was stunning and is solely responsible for the movie skyrocketing up to this spot on this list. Any time you get George Clooney to sign on to your film, you already have me excited because Clooney usually doesn't sign up for sub-par material. Plus, director Brad Bird has indeed given us animated classics like The Incredibles and Ratatouille, but he also is the genius behind Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol. He can do it all, and I fully anticipate him crafting yet another fantastic film with Tomorrowland.
6. Jurassic World
Synopsis: Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor's interest, which backfires horribly.
Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jake Johnson, Ty Simpkins
Director: Colin Trevorrow
Release: June 12
Admittedly, I was not as pumped about this movie as I am now about six months ago. I had only ever seen the first installment in this franchise. This new film was set to be reboot of sorts with a rather unproven director at the helm. Then, a couple of factors came into play that caused this film to rocket up this list. First of all, Chris Pratt was cast. Pratt had a breakout year in 2014 with his roles in The LEGO Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy, and with his continued presence on NBC's Parks and Recreation, Pratt slowly began to become one of my favorite actors around. The second factor was the release of the film's first trailer which was dynamite and packed with everything I wanted it to be packed with. The packed summer of 2015 is going to be awesome!
5. Spectre
Synopsis: A cryptic message from James Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.
Starring: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris
Director: Sam Mendes
Release: November 6
The James Bond franchise has hit its stride ever since Daniel Craig became 007 in Casino Royale. Craig's resume, consisting of Quantum of Solace and Skyfall in addition to Royale, is small yet classical. In 2015, Craig will return to the role that has made him a worldwide star in Spectre. There are numerous reasons to be excited for this Bond installment. Aside from the return of Craig, the return of director Sam Mendes who was the man behind the camera for Skyfall, arguably the best Bond film ever made, is so exciting to see! Mendes just has a knack for doing films like this, and if Spectre is half as great as Skyfall, we'll be in for a tremendous treat. Also, Waltz is playing one of the villains in the film. Waltz is a two-time Academy Award winner...for playing villains. Spectre has potential to reach brand new heights for the timeless franchise.
4. Furious 7
Synopsis: Deckard Shaw seeks revenge against Dominic Toretto and his family for the death of his brother.
Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham
Director: James Wan
Release: April 3
I got into the Fast and Furious franchise a little late considering that the first film I saw was the fifth installment, Fast Five. But man was that an awesome one to start with? Since then, I've journeyed back to the beginning of the franchise all the way up to the most recent sixth installment, and starting with the fourth film, this franchise just continues to improve. These films have everything you want in an action movie, but this film contains a little something extra seeing that it is the late Paul Walker's last film. The cast, especially Vin Diesel, were unashamedly and noticeably shaken up by the death of their beloved costar. This film is undoubtedly dedicated to his memory, meaning that these actors are going to leave it all out on the line in this film. I'm in for one last ride.
3. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2
Synopsis: After being symbolized as the 'Mockingjay' Katniss Everdeen and District 13 engage in an all-out revolution against the autocratic Capitol.
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Donald Sutherland, Julianne Moore
Director: Francis Lawrence
Release: November 20
In any other given year, the conclusion to one of my favorite franchises would be a no-brainer number one on this list. However, 2015 is not a normal year (see #1 and #2). All that to say, I'm still beyond stoked to see how Lawrence and Company bring The Hunger Games franchise to a close. As I mentioned previously, Jennifer Lawrence is my favorite actress working nowadays, and what she has done with the character of Katniss Everdeen is a portrayal for the ages. The action and stakes for this installment are obviously raised significantly, and the conclusion to this film will be discussed for months perhaps years after the film's release. There are so many reasons to anticipate the arrival of November 20.
2. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Synopsis: A continuation of the sage picking up after Star Wars VI- Return of the Jedi.
Starring: Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford
Director: J.J. Abrams
Release: December 18
We've been looking forward to it for years. Every bit of news that circulates on the Internet is met with avid interest and intrigue. Director J.J. Abrams is the perfect choice and fans around the world agreed wholeheartedly. When the cast was announced, everyone suddenly became a movie expert as they diagnosed how every member of the cast fits into the saga. Then, the trailer arrived as we got our first glimpse into the world of Star Wars once again. In December 2015, we finally get to journey back to a galaxy far, far away. How can one not be excited for this film?
1. Avengers: Age of Ultron
Synopsis: When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and it is up to the Avengers to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plans.
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, James Spader
Director: Joss Whedon
Release: May 1
By now, you probably know that I am a humongous Marvel fan. Everything they've ever put on the big screen has quickly become one of my favorite movies of all-time. In 2012, audiences got the treat we've all been craving: The Avengers. Director Joss Whedon had crafted a genuine classic beyond the superhero genre. A lot of things have happened to Earth's Mightiest Heroes since the last time they united as *POTENTIAL SPOILERS* Tony Stark has seemingly given up Iron Man and Captain America and Black Widow have just cleaned up the debacle of the HYDRA infiltration of SHIELD *END SPOILER*. The first trailer for this one blew me away just when I think I couldn't be more blown away by Marvel. The additions of the Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Quiksilver are awesome addtions and Spader as the villainous Ultron may be favorite casting choice of the year. May 1 is going to be a marvelous day!
Synopsis: The true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf.

Top 10 Movies of 2013
Another year has come and gone, and that means another year of fantastic movies have come and gone. 2013 was an incredible year at the movies! Blockbuster and blockbuster delivered, awards-worthy films lived up to the hype, and lesser known fare came in and got the whole nation talking.
When I look back at the movies I saw in 2013, I realized that I couldn't just mention 10 films for this list. I needed to start with some honorable mentions that just missed the cut.
The first two honorable mentions go out to two superhero blockbusters: Man of Steel and Thor: The Dark World. Both films promised high thrills with spectacular visuals and an intriguing storyline in their own unique way, and both movies delivered on their promise. Man of Steel was an excellent way to jump start the Superman franchise as Henry Cavill was superb as the titular character. We already knew what to expect with Thor 2, but it was nice to see that Marvel still has a trick or two up its sleeve when it comes to these characters we supposedly already know.
The next two honorable mentions are given two animated films: Monsters University and Despicable Me 2. Monsters U had Pixar giving us the back story to the dynamic duo of Mike and Sulley from Monsters Inc., and the best part about this movie is its unique message. The fact that you could work your absolute hardest and still fall short of reaching your goals, just like Mike did, but you still need to strive for excellence because you never know what's around the next corner was such an refreshing message to hear from a animated movie. Despicable Me 2 was pure entertainment. Gru's minions, of course, stole the show, and I'm alright with that.
The final two honorable mentions are heading out to very different films: Iron Man 3 and The Great Gatsby. Marvel had the daunting task of somehow following up the incredible success of 2012's The Avengers, and they turned to their most trusted personality, Tony Stark, and Robert Downey Jr. has never been better. The way he balanced the signature charisma that we all know and love from Tony Stark with the brand new horrors that are haunting Stark in the aftermath of the Battle of New York in The Avengers. Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce are sensational in their tremendous villianous roles. The Great Gatsby is also extremely well-acted, led by Leonardo DiCaprio, who turns in one of his best performances to date. Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire also deliver in a fantastic adaption of a very difficult book to bring to the screen.
Now on to the list!
10. Star Trek Into Darkness
After a one year delay in the release date, we finally were able to journey back onto the Enterprise and continue our adventures with Captain Kirk and the gang directed by the immortal J.J. Abrams, and what a treat it was! Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto turn in some truly stellar work as they banter and bicker for most of the movie while also being able to tug on the audience's heart strings towards the end of the film. Benedict Cumberbatch is slowly becoming one of my favorite up and coming actors, and he steals the show in Star Trek 2. He is menacing and vile while also being deceptive and somehow charismatic. J.J. Abrams proves to the world again that he just simply understands how to make a science-fiction blockbuster. Rest easy, Star Wars fans. If Star Wars VII is as good as Abrams' Star Trek duo, it'll be worth the anticipation.
9. Lee Daniels' The Butler
Every year, a film or two comes out that challenges the audience to stop and really consider the situation at hand that the movie is presenting. Lee Daniels' The Butler is one of those films. It challenges the audience to take a hard look at the civil rights movement through the eyes of a White House butler, an unique, yet powerful perspective. Forrest Whitaker brings Cecil Gaines to life and gives one of his best performances to date. Oprah Winfrey's performance as Cecil's wife is spellbinding as well, and the remaining supporting actors and actresses are clearly fully committed to their roles, which is always a joy to watch. Director Lee Daniels handles the material with such grace and care while also challenging and entertaining the viewer from start to finish.
8. Gravity
A handful of films in movie history have completely changed how movies are made when it comes to visual effects. Star Wars did it back in 1977. Avatar changed the game in 2009, and this past year, Gravity claimed its spot in cinematic history. The visuals in this film are simply unrivaled from the opening shot to the credit roll. However, we begin to talk about what's actually going on in the story. Sandra Bullock's gives a career-best performance as Ryan Stone, a role that deserves to be in strong contention for Best Actress this year at the Oscars. George Clooney, although with very limited screen time, is predictably great. Director Alfonso Cuaron does a sensational job in creating a film that will be talked about for generations to come.
7. Prisoners
Never in my movie watching career have a seen a more intense and suspenseful film than Prisoners. Every twist and turn that occurs along the way absolutely caught me by surprise as Prisoners is one of the most well-executed thrillers in recent history. Director Denis Villenueve takes his already stellar cast and takes them to a whole other level, many turning in one of their best performances ever, including star Hugh Jackman. Jackman displayed his acting chops in 2012 with Les Miserables, but in Prisoners, he brings something previously unseen in one of his films: vulnerability. Jackman's character is so determined and vengeful that the viewer can't help but ask questions once the movie is over. Jake Gyllenhaal turns in, by far, the best performance of his career. He turned what could have been a very one-dimensional character into someone with layers and depth, and that's the mark of some true, genuine talent.
6. 12 Years a Slave
Certain films come out every now and then that you know will be hard to watch because of the subject matter. Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan come to mind because you know what's going to happen before you even start the film, and yet, you're still taken aback by the sheer terror and villainy taking place before your eyes. Everyone knows that slavery was awful during the time preceding the American Civil War, but 12 Years a Slave shows just how awful it truly was through the eyes of Solomon Northrup, a free black man who is sold into slavery after being tricked by two white men after money. Chiwetal Ejiofor's performance is something special as he emotes every emotion in the book throughout the runtime of the film. I'll never be able to watch Michael Fassbender the same again after watching him act so vile and evil, and newcomer Lupita Nyong'o is simply heartbreaking. 12 Years a Slave may not be the best film of 2013, but it's very easily the most important.
5. Captain Phillips
I'm one of the biggest Tom Hanks' fans in the world. I have absolutely loved everything he has starred in, whether it be a serious role like The Green Mile, or a comedic role like Forrest Gump, or something just way out there like Big. Whenever he acts, he usually delivers a masterpiece, and Captain Phillips is no different. Hanks turns in a career-defining performance in this film as Captain Richard Phillips, securing his spot in movie history as one of the greatest actors ever. He is in command from start to finish of this suspenseful and pulse-pounding thriller, and it's a joy to watch. Barkhard Abdi, in his first acting job ever, more than holds his own opposite of Hanks as the menacing Somalian pirate who takes over Hanks' ship. Director Paul Greengrass does a masterful job in balancing the suspense with a genuine human side to both Phillips and Muse (Abdi's character). Hanks, Abdi, and Greengrass deserve a spot on the Oscar ballots for sure!
4. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Living up to expectations can be extremely difficult (just ask George Lucas after making the Star Wars prequels). It's even harder when the fanbase is so passionate about their source material. In March 2012 when The Hunger Games was released, I expected a good, not necessarily a great, film. It blew away my expectations and was great. Going into Catching Fire, I expected something very equal to the first installment in terms of entertainment and performances. Fortunately, I was wrong once again about this franchise as Catching Fire was simply sensational. Having read all three books, I consider Catching Fire the best book in the trilogy by far so I was hoping with all my heart that would bring this book justice, and they most certainly did. The entire cast is firing on all cylinders, especially Jennifer Lawrence and Donald Sutherland as they butt heads time and time again in preparation for the epic finale beginning Novemeber 2014. If Mockingjay- Part 1 can live up to Catching Fire, I anticipate it making an appearance on this list next year.
3. American Hustle
No director working in Hollywood is on more of a roll than David O. Russell is. 2010's The Fighter and 2012's Silver Linings Playbook were both extremely well received, and with his latest outing, American Hustle, he has truly outdone himself. This film is so entertaining while also telling a compelling story which is not an easy balance to achieve. Christian Bale has never been better is the leading role he was truly born to play. Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence are great as usual, but the real scene-stealer is Bradley Cooper who is slowly becoming an extremely bonafide actor and one of my personal favorites. It was just so much fun to watch this movie unfold before my eyes, and I can't wait to see what Russell has in store next.
2. Frozen
I am a HUGE fan of Disney's animated movies all the way back from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to their lasting outing, Frozen, and Frozen is by far one of the best Disney films of all-time. It truly is an instant classic! The voice talent is superb, led by Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel who voice Anna and Elsa perfectly. The true star of the show, though, is Josh Gad's Olaf who is as funny as any sidekick Disney has ever created! The animation is spectacular, and the music is legendary. Let It Go is one of the best Disney songs ever written and performed in my opinion, and it's just as great as some other classics like A Whole New World and Can You Feel the Love Tonight. Frozen is a film that will undoubtedly be loved and adored for generations to come!
1. Saving Mr. Banks
Mary Poppins is a true and genuine classic, and Saving Mr Banks, telling the story of author P.L. Travers inspiration for Mary Poppins, is a true and genuine classic as well. This movie is magical from beginning to end! Emma Thompson has never been better as P.L. Travers as she commands every scene throughout the film. Tom Hanks' charisma and charm are off the charts as he brings Walt Disney to life like no other actor could. Both Thompson and Hanks turn in some of the best work of their careers! B.J. Novak and Jason Schwartzmann bring the Sherman Brothers (the lyricists behind Mary Poppins) to life with so much humor and emotion that it becomes a true pleasure to watch. Being a lifelong Disney fan, watching this film was a true treat and an experience I'll treasure forever along with a movie that I'll never forget.
When I look back at the movies I saw in 2013, I realized that I couldn't just mention 10 films for this list. I needed to start with some honorable mentions that just missed the cut.

Top 20 Most Anticipated Movies for 2014
A brand new year always brings one guarantee: a brand new batch of movies hitting a silver screens nationwide! 2013 was a fantastic year at the movies with film after film delivering on its promise of thrills and award worthiness. A handful of movies that were released in 2013 were instant classics and clearly films that will be talked about 50 years from now.
But 2013 is over and 2014 is just around the corner...and 2014 looks as promising as ever!
Every month from January to December, on paper, looks to consist of a handful of films that we will probably be talking about this time next year. The first part of the year looks surprisingly very promising while the summer looks as spectacular as ever with the Oscar season already shaping up to be one great race!
Let's take a look at 20 films that I cannot wait to see in 2014!
20. Get on Up
Synopsis: A chronicle of James Brown's rise from extreme poverty to become one of the most influential musicians in history.
Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Nelsan Ellis
Director: Tate Taylor
Release: August 1
In 2011, director Tate Taylor made quite a name for himself when he released the stellar The Help as it went on to garner 4 Oscar nominations and a win for Octavia Spencer for Best Supporting Actress. On paper, this looks to be another entertaining, yet powerful take on a dark period of history. James Brown is a legend and bringing him to the screen is going to be challenging, but Chadwick Boseman is more than capable of doing so. If you want any proof, go check out this past year's 42, in which Boseman portrays Jackie Robinson, another American legend. Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer are great in everything they do and Get on Up is already on its way to being a heavy hitter come next Oscar season.
19. The Fault in Our Stars
Synopsis: Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group.
Starring: Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Willem Dafoe, Laura Dern
Director: Josh Boone
Release: June 6
Every now and then, a movie will be coming up that, for no apparent reason, I'm intrigued by, and in 2014, The Fault in Our Stars is that movie. How in the world did a film about two teenagers falling in love who happen to also have cancer find its way on this list? Shailene Woodley. Woodley is one of the best up and coming actresses in Hollywood after making a name for herself in The Descendants and The Spectacular Now. Now, she gets to finally take center stage and showcase her true talents for all of the nation. Seeing Dafoe in a supporting turn is also intriguing as well as seeing how the young, yet talented Josh Boone directs such a storyline.
18. Exodus
Synopsis: The story of Moses from the Bible
Starring: Christian Bale, Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver, Joel Edgerton
Director: Ridley Scott
Release: December 12
This year sees the release of 3 Biblical epics: Russell Crowe's Noah in March and The Bible's Son of God coming out in February. The first one of the three making this list, however, is Scott's Exodus, and the reason for that is to see Christian Bale act once again, something that is always a treat. Whatever role he takes on, it is a guarantee that he will be completely immersed in that role and will give it all he's got, and that's something you can truly appreciate as a viewer. The story of Moses is also an excellent story to translate to the screen, and Ridley Scott needs a truly phenomenal film after a couple of disappointments the last few years.
17. Guardians of the Galaxy
Synopsis: A jet pilot gets stranded in space, and must unite a diverse team of aliens to form a squad capable of defeating cosmic threats.
Starring: Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace
Director: James Gunn
Release: August 1
Up to this point, Marvel has, very effectively, played it safe by releasing films that they know the audience will love featuring the characters everybody knows like Iron Man and Thor. This August, however, Marvel is going to take their first real gamble and truly see how beloved this company is with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy. Not everybody knows the story of these Marvel characters, and most people probably didn't even know this was a Marvel movie. That's why this is a gamble, but based off of history, Marvel usually doesn't disappoint.
16. Muppets: Most Wanted
Synopsis: While on a grand world tour, The Muppets find themselves wrapped into an European jewel-heist caper headed by a Kermit the Frog look-alike and his dastardly sidekick.
Starring: Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, Ty Burrell
Director: James Bobin
Release: March 21
In 2011, Kermit and the gang returned to the silver screen better than ever as they co-stared alongside Amy Adams and Jason Segal in The Muppets in one of the funnest movies of the year. This time around, Adams and Segal are gone, but Gervais, Burrell, and Fey are in, and this looks to be one fun film to watch. Disney is on a hot streak as of late when it comes to quality so they're going to continue to give everything they've got to get to the best product out there, and Muppets: Most Wanted will benefit.
15. Noah
Synopsis: The Biblical Noah suffers visions of an apocalyptic deluge and takes measures to protect his family from the coming flood.
Starring: Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman
Director: Darren Aronofsky
Release: March 28
The story of Noah is one of my favorites in the entire Bible as it's a story about a man who personifies faith and then lives it out regardless of the consequences. This story is also one that I cannot wait play out on the big screen. Russell Crowe is one of my personal favorite actors so to see him take on this role is exciting enough, but then when you take a look at the supporting cast led by Connelly, Watson, and Lerman, it's a guarantee that the acting will be top-notch. Aronofsky is an interesting choice as director which prevents Noah from being higher on this list, but the story and acting is simply too grand to ignore.
14. Godzilla
Synopsis: A giant radioactive monster called Godzilla appears to wreak destruction on mankind.
Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Sally Hawkins
Director: Gareth Edwards
Release: May 16
A few weeks ago, Godzilla probably wouldn't have made it on this list. Why? Because I knew nothing about it. Not the stars, the director, the story. Nothing. But then they released the trailer, and I was sold! The trailer featured excellent visuals that are reminiscent of this past year's Pacific Rim. The real shock to me, however, came when I saw the cast list which features Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston who is one of the greatest actors around. Throw in Taylor-Johnson, Olsen, and Hawkins and you have something most films of this magnitude lack: star power, and that goes a long way.
13. How to Train Your Dragon 2
Synopsis: It's been five years since Hiccup and Toothless successfully united dragons and vikings on the island of Berk. While Astrid, Snoutlout and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island's new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds. When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. Now, Hiccup and Toothless must unite to stand up for what they believe while recognizing that only together do they have the power to change the future of both men and dragons.
Starring: Jay Baruchel, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett
Director: Dean DeBlois
Release: June 13
Outside of Disney, there are very few animated films that I consider classics, and How to Train Your Dragon is one of those classics. It was thoroughly entertaining while also bringing out great visuals and a surprisingly heartfelt story along with superb voice talent and an abundance of hilarity. My expectations are very high for this sequel, but after taking a look at the plot and returning voice actors, I have a feeling that those expectations have potentially to be eclipsed. I sure hope so!
12. Edge of Tomorrow
Synopsis: A soldier fighting in a war with aliens finds himself caught in a time loop of his last day in the battle, though he becomes better skilled along the way.
Starring: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Lara Pulver
Director: Doug Liman
Release: June 6
Last April, Tom Cruise returned the science-fiction genre with the incredibly entertaining Oblivion. When Cruise is doing science-fiction, he's usually at his best. War of the Worlds and Minority Report are two classics in my opinion, and Edge of Tomorrow looks to have all the makings of another classic. Emily Blunt costars alongside Cruise, and she has the potential to steal the show away from Cruise. Doug Liman has some impressive credentials as well as he has directed The Bourne Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Edge of Tomorrow's trailer was also impressive which gives me hope that this movie is going to be great.
11. Transcendence
Synopsis: A terminally ill scientist downloads his body into a computer. This grants him power beyond his wildest dreams, and soon he becomes unstoppable.
Starring: Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy
Director: Wally Pfister
Release: April 18
Wally Pfister was the cinematographer for The Dark Knight trilogy which means he's been able to work under a living legend: director Christopher Nolan. With Transcendence, Pfister takes his first crack at directing for himself and Nolan is producing. This film has all the making of being a truly amazing film. Of course, when you have Johnny Depp as your star, you're well on your way. The supporting cast is also fantastic, but the storyline is also extremely promising. I've got a feeling that this movie is going to bend some minds and cause some arguments, which is very similar to Inception (a Nolan-directed, Pfister-shot movie), and that movie is a classic.
10. Transformers: Age of Extinction
Synopsis: A mechanic and his daughter make a discovery that brings down Autobots and Decepticons - and a paranoid government official - on them.
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Nicola Peltz
Director: Michael Bay
Release: June 27
Say what you want about the first three installments of the Transformers franchise in regard to the cinematic side of things, but you can't argue that for most people, those three films were incredibly entertaining, and that was with Shia LaBeouf at the helm. Now, Mark Wahlberg is the star, somebody with actually acting capability, alongside those famous shape-shifters. Not much is known about the storyline yet and a trailer is yet to be released, but Bay will undoubtedly bring it with the visuals and deliver one of the most entertaining summer blockbusters of the year.
9. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Synopsis: Survivors of the simian plague trigger an all-out war between humanity and Caesar's growing forces.
Starring: Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Andy Serkis, Keri Russell
Director: Matt Reeves
Release: July 11
When Rise of the Planet of the Apes came out in 2011 with James Franco starring, expectations for this reboot were pretty low and most people mocked and scoffed at the idea of attempting to redo the franchise once again. Then, however, audiences saw the final product, and they began to think otherwise because the reboot worked and worked really well. Franco is out this time around, but the stars are still shining with veteran Oldman costarring alongside up and coming superstar Jason Clarke and CGI expert Andy Serkis. The first trailer was really well done and gives me hope that this film can exceed the expectations that the first one put on it.
8. Maleficent
Synopsis: The "Sleeping Beauty" tale is told from the perspective of the villainous Maleficent and looks at the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse young Princess Aurora.
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Juno Temple
Director: Robert Stromberg
Release: May 30
In the history of Disney villains, none have been more evil and vile than Sleeping Beauty's Maleficent, so it's only fitting that the infamous villain get a movie all to herself, and be portrayed by Angelina Jolie nonetheless. Jolie's presence is why this film is ranked so high on this list because she fits the profile of Maleficent perfectly in my opinion, and I can't wait to see what she does with the role to take it above and beyond my expectations. Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium) is turning in a supporting role here which also has me intrigued. Disney has plans to maybe bring some more villains to the big screen after this one, so they obviously think that Maleficent is going to win audiences worldwide. You've sold me.
7. Into the Woods
Synopsis: A witch conspires to teach important lessons to various characters of popular children's stories including Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel.
Starring: Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine
Director: Rob Marshall
Release: December 25
I'm a sucker for a musical. Whether it be a Disney animated musical like this past year's Frozen, or a heavier adaption like 2012's Les Miserables, if you're singing, I'll be singing right there with you. Into the Woods (which is being released by Disney) boasts a stellar cast who can all sing AND act which is so vital. Rob Marshall is also behind the camera directing it all, and he knows his way around a musical as he was at the helm of the 2003 Best Picture winner Chicago. Disney has given this film a prime awards season release date on Christmas Day 2014, obviously a huge vote of confidence for for the film, and with Streep and Depp starring, who could blame them?
6. The Hobbit: There and Back Again
Synopsis: The Company of Thorin has reached Smaug's lair; but, can Bilbo and the Dwarves reclaim Erebor and the treasure? And, if so, can they hold on to it?
Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellan, Luke Evans, Evangeline Lilly
Director: Peter Jackson
Release: December 17
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was a bit of a disappointed for Lord of the Rings fans overall, but Peter Jackson and company saved face this past December with an excellent second installment, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The way this past film ended makes me really anxious to see There and Back Again to see how they tie everything together once and for all. The entire cast from Smaug, and, most importantly, Smaug himself returns in what will surely be an epic finale.
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Synopsis: Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from old history: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier.
Starring: Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Redford
Directors: Anthony and Joe Russo
Release: April 4
Marvel looks to continue their hot streak with creating a sequel for their first Avenger, Captain America. This is one of the final two films (Guardians of the Galaxy) Marvel will be releasing before the highly anticipated The Avengers: Age of Ultron in May 2015 (Spoiler Alert: that will appear at #1 on this list next year). Thor: The Dark World severely lacked the presence of SHIELD, so I'm thinking, and the trailer all but confirms, that we will be getting a heavy dose of the secret agency this time around, something I thoroughly look forward to. The addition of Robert Redford as a new agent is also intriguing and exciting. Let's hope that Marvel hits yet another home run.
4. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Synopsis: Peter Parker runs the gauntlet as the mysterious company Oscorp sends up a slew of supervillains against him, impacting on his life.
Starring: Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, Emma Stone, Paul Giamatti
Director: Marc Webb
Release: May 2
When Marvel decided to reboot the Spider-Man franchise back in the summer of 2012, I was skeptical, simply because I thought it was too soon since the release of Spider-Man 3. Luckily, The Amazing Spider-Man was an extremely well done movie with great thrills and performances, especially from the new webslinger, Andrew Garfield. This time around, Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti are enemies of Spider-Man and Oscorp is also investigated more in depth. Marvel has placed the sequel in its prime first weekend of May slot, signalling confidence. I hope it can deliver.
3. Interstellar
Synopsis: A group of explorers make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine
Director: Christopher Nolan
Release: November 7
Now that The Dark Knight franchise is complete with Christopher Nolan at the helm, Nolan is free to do whatever he wants, when he wants, with who he wants. It's exciting beyond words to see Nolan dive back into some original flare because when he does just that, he's at his best. The Prestige and Inception are two of my favorites films ever, both directed by Nolan. With Interstellar, Nolan has trule brought together some of the best actors on the planet to pull off what will undoubtedly be an epic adventure. McConaughey is on an absolute roll right now and I can't to see him continue his career resurgence and after the spellbinding Zero Dark Thirty, Jessica Chastain is back and will hopefully continue to be one of the best actresses working today alongside her costar, Anne Hathaway, who is coming off her first Oscar win for Les Miserables.
2. X-Men: Days of Future Past
Synopsis: The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence
Director: Bryan Singer
Release: May 23
In addition to the four actors mentioned above, this X-Men installment also stars Ian McKellan, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, and Halle Berry. I'm sold!
1. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1
Synopsis: Katniss Everdeen reluctantly becomes the symbol of a mass rebellion against the autocratic Capitol.
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman
Director: Francis Lawrence
Release: November 21
The Hunger Games franchise is one of the best around, and this November, the end begins. While this book is, admittedly, my least favorite of the trilogy, it's impossible to not get excited to see how this all comes to a close. Lawrence is picture perfect as Katniss, and I have no doubt that she'll deliver another great performance in the movie. Julianne Moore joins the cast for the last two films which I have no problem with at all. Here's hoping that the end of this franchise is as spectacular as the beginning.
But 2013 is over and 2014 is just around the corner...and 2014 looks as promising as ever!
Every month from January to December, on paper, looks to consist of a handful of films that we will probably be talking about this time next year.

Updated Oscar Predictions
Oscar season is in full swing and while we're still over a month away from the nominees actually being announced, the fields for all categories are beginning to look pretty clear. Let's take a look at the nominees as I see them with the first film or name listed being the frontrunner and the last name being the most vulnerable.
Best Picture
12 Years a Slave
Gravity
Saving Mr. Banks
The Wolf of Wall Street
Nebraska
Captain Phillips
Her
Inside Llewyn Davis
American Hustle
Possible Spoilers: Lone Survivor, Dallas Buyers Club, Lee Daniels' The Butler
With The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle revealing themselves, all of the possible nominees have been seen and reviewed. 12 Years a Slave and Gravity are still the frontrunners and have received nice boosts from critic groups nationwide to begin the award season. Saving Mr. Banks' chances will rely heavily on its box office performance domestically. If people show up for this movie, the Academy could award it for being the lighter film. Watch out for The Wolf of Wall Street. I've heard from more than one critic that it's Martin Scorsese's best film which is a HUGE complement. Outside of those four, I don't forsee any other film being a threat at the point. They're safe for nominations, but a win is unlikely.
Best Director
Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave
Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street
Joel and Ethan Coen, Inside Llewyn Davis
Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips
Possible Spoilers: Alexander Payne, Nebraska; Spike Jonze, Her; John Lee Hancock, Saving Mr. Banks; David O. Russell, American Hustle
McQueen and Cuaron are locker in, and one of the two will probably end up being the winner. If The Wolf of Wall Street continues to gain momentum, Scorsese can play in as a major factor. The last two spots are up for grabs. The Coen brothers are Oscar favorites so I would not be shocked in the least to see them sited. Greengrass has lost a lot of momentum since the beginning of the season, but I have faith that he'll be able to sneak in with his directing of one of the year's best films. The possible spoilers all have a legit shot at sneaking into the field but will need help in the precursors.
Best Actor
Chiwetal Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
Bruce Dern, Nebraska
Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
Possible Spoilers: Robert Redford, All is Lost; Forrest Whitaker, Lee Daniels' The Butler; Joaquin Phoenix, Her; Oscar Isaac, Inside Llewyn Davis; Christian Bale, American Hustle
The top four seem pretty safe at this point with all having a pretty good chance to take home the prize. The final spot is up for grabs though in a big way. I'm going with DiCaprio because 1) he was snubbed last year for Django Unchained; 2) he's never won an Oscar; and 3) The Wolf of Wall Street is gaining some serious buzz. Redford has lost a lot of steam as of late, even missing out on the SAG nomination. The remaining four all have a shot, but are looking less likely everyday.
Best Actress
Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
Sandra Bullock, Gravity
Emma Thompson, Saving Mr. Banks
Meryl Streep, August: Osage County
Judi Dench, Philomena
Possible Spoiler: Amy Adams, American Hustle
Basically, these five actresses are the final five. I do not see any other actress sneaking in and bumping one of these five. Adams has a chance because she's a four-time nominee and American Hustle could gain momentum once the public begins to see it, but it's a long shot. These five look to be safe. Who wins, however, is a different story. I can see Blanchett, Bullock, or Thompson taking home the prize with Streep and Dench happy to be nominated. Whoever may win will then be a multiple Oscar winner as each one of these five actresses have won in the past.
Best Supporting Actor
Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave
Tom Hanks, Saving Mr. Banks
James Gandolfini, Enough Said
Barkhard Abdi, Captain Phillips
Possible Spoilers: Jonah Hill, The Wolf of Wall Street; Daniel Bruhl, Rush; John Goodman, Inside Llewyn Davis; Will Forte, Nebraska; Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
Of all the categories, this one is the most wide open with only Leto and Fassbender being safe at this point in the race. Hanks is probably going to be able to sneak in there because, well, he's Tom Hanks as he's playing Walt Disney. The late James Gandolfini should be receiving a posthumous nomination with a chance at pulling off the upset and getting the win. Abdi had been quiet up to this point in the race, but then he scored a SAG nomination, and now I believe he'll be able to sneak in. All five spoilers have a chance to break into the field with Hill being the most likely because of the anticipated Wolf momentum.
Best Supporting Actress
Oprah Winfrey, Lee Daniels' The Butler
Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave
Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
June Squibb, Nebraska
Octavia Spencer, Fruitvale Station
Possible Spoilers: Julia Roberts, August: Osage County; Margo Martindale, August: Osage County
If Oprah is nominated, which I highly anticpate her being, I don't see her losing. She is, by far, the best part of The Butler and she can work the awards circuit like nobody else. Nyong'o, though, poses a huge threat as she is representing the Best Picture frontunner. Her role is heartbreaking and the Academy loves role like her's. Lawrence is one of the most popular actresses in the business today and she is on her way to going down in history as one of the best actresses of all-time. If American Hustle can pick up some steam, watch out for Lawrence. Squibb and Spencer will have to settle for a nomination, but watch out for the Osage County women. They're both hot on their heels.
